"Art is something that has taught me to breathe with a different kind of happiness."

–Anni Albers

Creating is something that has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Self-taught, I began drawing at a very young age but the idea of creating anything on canvas for scrutiny intimidated me. I decided to pursue a career as a pastry chef as edible art afforded me a creative outlet that felt much safer than anything I could put on a canvas. I put down my art tools for many years to focus solely on building my career as a pastry chef. When I decided I wanted to rediscover my original passion of drawing, an autoimmune disease had already left me with limited ability most days to hold a pencil the way I’ve known my whole life. Typically, the amount of time I am able to hold a pencil is limited so once I have outlined the artwork, I use my fingers to shade in the remaining places of the pieces. My paintings are done much in the same way.Maiya M.
